The Ecumenical Jury of INTERFILM and SIGNIS awards its prize in the Forum section to Erde for its depiction of the devastation of our planet by human intervention – an issue of urgent concern today. The documentary depicts searing images of the destruction of Earth’s topography as well as candid conversations with workers, engineers, and scientists. The jury commends the lamentation for Mother Earth by an Aboriginal Canadian woman at the conclusion of the film, which is an invitation to reflect on our responsibility.

„Die Schauspieler*innen sind Laien, die Regiearbeit amateurhaft, das Make-up sieht billig aus, die Regisseur*innen haben für ihre Adaption noch nicht einmal den Roman gelesen. Alles hätte schiefgehen können mit diesem Film, aber er ist nicht gescheitert. Stattdessen füllt dieser Stummfilm über die Auferstehung der lebenden Toten einen nahezu unverfilmbaren Roman mit Leben und lässt darüber hinaus die unterdrückte Vergangenheit sowie – auf dem fast ausgestorbenen Super-8-Format – das Kino aufleben. Das Ergebnis ist urkomisch, bissig, manchmal verwirrend, witzig und sicher auch etwas, mit dem nicht alle einverstanden sind. Aber das macht Kino aus: Wir müssen uneinig sein!“

She takes a stand, undaunted, and assumes responsibility for breaking the silence of an entire generation.

Historische Dokumente gewinnen Konturen und werden erlebbar. Geschichte wird hier zu einem Fluss durch ein ganzes Jahrhundert deutscher (Familien)Geschichte, die eine eindringliche Stimme erhält. Der Poesie aus Tagebüchern und Briefen fügt der Regisseur keinen weiteren Kommentar hinzu – er findet Bilder für sie. Aus dieser Fülle persönlicher Dokumente, wie es sie in Zukunft wohl nicht mehr geben wird, formt Thomas Heise einen eindrücklichen, klarsichtigen und wahrhaft großen Film.“
