We were deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Viennese film artist Gustav Deutsch who, in Shirely – Visions of Reality, captivated us with his multi-layered, cinematic encounters with painting. The moving and the stationary image, the damaged
as well as the intact and both the professional views and those of amateurs were all subject to the exploratory spirit and
regard of this outstanding artist and thinker, who imparted accuracy as well as openness in our approach to the moving image
and above all, the certainty that film is more than film.
