From 2016 on, the Werner Herzog Foundation ist planning to honor a special achievement in innovation, courage, and vision in the art of cinema. The jury agreed unanimously
on the first Werner Herzog Award laureate Hubert Sauper for his disquieting documentary on Sudan We Come As Friends.
The 2016 jury acknowledges the extraordinary courage of Hubert Sauper to have his own miniature airplane built, flying
it himself into the war-torn area of Southern Sudan. The film gives deep insight into the surreal, the dangers, and the power
struggles determining the fate of the people in this mostly uncharted territory. What makes We Come As Friends particularly remarkable is the caliber of filmmaking, its deep sense of poetry. This is not investigative journalism. There
is a strange, all pervading vision we have not seen in world cinema for a long time.
The prize is endowed with 5,000.
