DOCUMENTARY
The Bands
Egon Humer
'Gotta give us what we want / Gotta give us what we need / Our freedom of speech is freedom or death (...) / Most of my heroes
don't appear on no stamps (...) / We gotta fight the powers that be' (Chuck D.)
Vienna, 1993: The Viennese music scene is more varied than ever before. There is a flood of concerts, the gigs are sold out,
some musicians achieve success abroad. From techno to death metal, from hardcore to pop rock - the Viennese music scene can
hold its own against foreign competitors. The scene opens up, new target groups are reached. A network of fanzines, pirate
radio stations and the 'Musicbox' program supplies information and supports charity activities and political goals. The time
for establishing the 'Viennese Scene' was never so ripe. The Bands. The film has a simple structure: The City - The Song -
The Performance. The music is both fast and slow, loud and soft. The music and the sounds of the city interacting. Music from
the bands' point of view. The closest possible proximity to the intensity, concentration and sweat. No distance - the stage
as arena - in the foreground of the creative act.
