In the summer of 1936 four young climbers died when trying to climb the infamously difficult Eiger Nordwand near Bern. Driven by their long-felt want and the German spirit of mountainclimbing, two ordinary mountaineers from Berchtes- gaden and two other decided to ascent the Eiger Nordwand. The tragedy that was observed by guests of a luxurious hotel, still remains as one of the most dramatic events in the history of alpinism.
