Roma have lived in Istanbul’s Sulukule neighbourhood for almost 1000 years. The city plans to rebuild the rundown area. By demolishing their homes and evicting the inhabitants and transferring them to a remote suburb, 40 km away, a new high-priced “historic-osmanic” quarter will arise.
