Malaria
Niki List
Café Malaria is the meeting place of the young people in Vienna - an 'in' café frequented by all kinds of types. Tusnelda
is at the bar. She's cool and overlooks a lot of things. Two left activists in casual clothes reminisce in their political
jargon about Mao, Wittgenstein and the Spontis. Nearby, two girls chatter about divorce. Attila, a yuppie, and his friend
Friedrich, complain about the lack of champagne in this impossible place. The couple Adam and Eva talk about their personal
relationship and act as if they're jealous of each other. An American is standing at the bar. He drinks slowly and is in fact
the lonely boy with culture, a lone wolf. In the backyard, two guys are hiding in the ash cans and are waiting for Godot.
Gregor has a wealthy father and has borrowed his automobile but the rockers and no parking place prevent him from entering
the café. Two young punks absolutely want to buy some 'stuff' and fall for Thomas who sells them dried banana skins. Hugo
is really lonesome and is looking for a girl. He just has to meet Livia who's in the same boat. Afterwards they go back to
Café Malaria. Finally, when a naked streaker dashes into the café with the cops after him, it's just wonderful. Everybody
feels fine after drinking a lot of the drinks with weird names.
As a parody of the zeitgeist, Malaria was a commercial smash.
