The film is an unusual love story between Mario, a man from the city, still young but already a loser, and a middle-aged farmer’s daughter from a small village in the provinces, herself disappointed with life. Mario wants to begin a new existence; in order to escape from his criminal circle of friends and the brutality of life at home with his parents, he flees from Vienna to the countryside. He ends up at the mountain farmhouse of Frau Gusenleitner and her father, who take him on as a labourer in return for board and lodging. They form a curious trio in the midst of loneliness and their hard work on the farm. The grumpy old man and his careworn daughter do not ask about the whys and wherefores. Mario begins to feel trust and affection for these total strangers, who themselves are outsiders in the village community. For the first time, he experiences love and sexuality without hate and dependency. In his new world, everything takes on a new meaning. And yet, he is afraid that his rural idyll cannot last and that the past will catch up with him.
