Hinterholz 8

Hinterholz 8

Harald Sicheritz
The Krcal family, Herbert and Margit, dream of their own home. On the second Saturday of each month, they visit their world of dreams, the "Blue Lagoon" with their son Phillipp. The "Blue Lagoon" is a subdivision of prefabricated houses in the south of Vienna. Afterwards, they discuss their plans in their rented apartment, which is on the busiest street in Vienna. Two hundred and eighty square feet on the fourth floor, no elevator, windows facing the street. Herbert grosses 18,000 schillings (about $1500) per month, plus a few thousand more with overtime. Margit is a housewife with modest needs. Phillipp wants a mountain bike. A parking space for the new Mazda diesel costs almost 1800 schillings monthly, and a savings agreement will mature next year, ending the family's money-saving marathon. A balance of 135,221 schillings, and they will collect 440,000 schillings. That would pay for the basement. But not for the land and the house itself. Or they could buy a mobile home. For their parking space. Meier, who works with Herbert, grosses only 16,000 schillings monthly, but he owns a house. And an old station wagon. Meier spent weekend after weekend renovating his old farmhouse, and now it's finished. Meier is smart, all right. Herbert decides to get smart himself and buys a small farmhouse. 'Hinterholz 8', it's dilapidated but terribly romantic. The Krcal's dream of owning a house comes true.
